Clothing & Textiles 2022-2023

Hello, and welcome to the Sewing Lab!
Grade 6 program: the Grade 6 students from SMS begin the course with a focus on three basic hand stitches: the running stitch, back stitch, and whip stitch. After completing a safety quiz, they learn and
practice these stitches, then work on a keychain pet project. Their second project expands their
knowledge of hand-stitches to include variations of the three they’ve already learned, plus a pinwheel
rose and French knot. We also learn about clothing and culture; students are able to choose between
completing an embroidery project or a cross-stitched project, which features Ukrainian designs.
If you enjoy making these projects in class, I would encourage you to continue using your hand-sewing
skills to make fun projects at home! Most of the supplies we have in the classroom can be found at the
dollar store 
Grade 7/8 program: after a quick review of the hand-sewing stitches learned in Grade 6, students will
complete an embroidery or cross-stitched project. This may be a keychain, magnet, or Christmas
ornament/wall hanging. Next, we learn about sewing machine safety, how to thread a machine, and
how to adjust its settings. Our first machine-sewn project will be small and simple; a coffee cup cozy, a
bookmark, a scrunchie, or a relaxing eye mask. We will learn about different types of fabric, and how to
choose the best one for our next project, which will be an apron, pj shorts, bucket hat, or tote bag.
Looking forward to creating with you!
